Timeless natural stone

Granite worktops, supplied & fitted

Granite is 100% natural stone, formed from cooled magma and quarried in solid slabs. Every piece is unique, it shrugs off heat, and with a little care it lasts the lifetime of the house.

Granite has been the classic stone worktop for decades, and it still earns its place. It's hard, dense and naturally heat resistant, so it copes with busy, hands-on cooking better than almost anything else. And because no two slabs are the same, a granite kitchen has a depth and character that engineered surfaces can't quite copy.

Popular choices range from the deep, near-uniform Absolute Black to speckled greys like Steel Grey, shimmering Black Pearl and lighter, warmer stones that suit farmhouse and shaker kitchens. Entry-level granites are often a little cheaper than entry-level quartz.

Why choose granite

  • 100% natural: every slab is unique
  • Excellent heat resistance
  • Very hard and scratch resistant
  • Often the most affordable stone
  • Lasts the life of the kitchen

Worth knowing

  • Slightly porous: needs resealing every year or two
  • Pattern varies across a slab, so we help you choose
  • Lighter granites show oils more than dark ones

What does a granite worktop cost?

Granite typically costs around £200–£550 per square metre supplied and fitted, or roughly £1,200–£2,800 for a typical 5–6 m² kitchen. Standard blacks and greys are at the lower end; rarer, exotic granites at the top. Every quote from us includes templating, fabrication in our Sheffield workshop, cut-outs, a polished edge and fitting. See the full worktop cost guide.

Polished, honed or leathered?

Polished granite has a deep gloss that brings out the colour and crystals; it's the most practical and most popular. Honed is a smooth matt finish with a softer, contemporary look, but it can show fingermarks more. Leathered (sometimes called brushed) has a gentle texture that hides smudges well, especially on dark stones like Absolute Black.

Looking after granite

Wipe it with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Granite is slightly porous, so we seal it before fitting and recommend resealing every year or two, which is a ten-minute job with a spray sealer. A simple test: if water still beads on the surface, the seal is fine. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, which can dull the polish over time. More in our care guide.

How we fit granite worktops

Granite is heavy and unforgiving, so the fit matters. We template precisely, cut and polish in our own Sheffield workshop, and install with our own team, nationwide. In Sheffield itself, see granite worktops Sheffield.

Questions

Granite worktops: common questions

How much do granite worktops cost?

Granite typically costs £200–£550 per m² supplied and fitted, or roughly £1,200–£2,800 for a typical 5–6 m² kitchen. Standard blacks and greys are the most affordable.

Is granite cheaper than quartz?

Entry-level granite is often slightly cheaper than entry-level quartz. At the premium end the two are similar in price.

Does granite need sealing?

Yes, occasionally. We seal it before fitting, and a reseal every year or two with a spray sealer keeps it protected. If water still beads on the surface, the seal is working.

Can I put hot pans on granite?

Granite has excellent heat resistance and copes with hot pans far better than quartz or laminate. We still suggest a trivet for very hot cast iron, to protect the seal and avoid thermal shock.

Which granite colours are most popular?

Absolute Black, Steel Grey and Black Pearl are consistently popular, along with lighter speckled stones for farmhouse and shaker kitchens. Send us your kitchen style on WhatsApp and we'll suggest options.
